Late Arrivals

This note is relevant for those who want to attend the formal, but can't arrive until late. 9:00pm late! Lanese told me that is the case for Nobu for instance, who'll be taking an "Options & Futures" exam in Simon Hall until then.

While we don’t condone "unfashionably" late arrivals, the Nobu's of the Olin community are in luck. It's alright if a handful of you show up after your late exam if you must. It shouldn’t preclude you from attending. Just know a few things:

  1. RSVP's are still required
  2. Cancellations and "no-show" penalties are fully applicable
  3. Food may be gone by the time you arrive

If you need further clarification, "comment" to this blog post and we'll reply.

That said, we hope you ace your exam and join us at the Ritz for a champagne toast afterwards.

Cheers,
Casey

RSVP Now or Wait?

Now. The "Olin at the Ritz" team is cognizant that some of our colleagues are "holding out" to RSVP. The chief reason is because they're not certain whether or not they'll bring a guest. And so by waiting the idea is that you'll have the option to do either. We advise against that approach.

Mostly because it’s completely unnecessary. If you decide you want to bring a guest after you register at $0 as an individual, simply re-enter the online RSVP form and pay the $20 to register with a guest. Your original entry will be automatically deleted and you'll be golden. Yes, it's that simple. So register now instead, you have nothing to gain by waiting.

The other reason it's smart to RSVP immediately is because RSVP's skyrocketed last week. This event is capped at 250 and the water is getting closer to the ceiling every day.

Special Music Requests

Feel free to request music ahead of time. The DJ has prepared a website where we can request individual songs to make sure we dance the night away!
Request now, the website closes on February 23rd!

Black Tie Optional

What does black tie optional mean? Most plainly put, it means that men and women should wear formal attire.

Suits are acceptable, however, please see the blog post regarding Stallone's Tuxedos if you are interested in renting a tuxedo for the event. Tuxedos are not required for men, but encouraged.

Dresses are the most common option for women, however, traditional formal attire from all cultures is encouraged and appreciated!

No one is expected to go out and purchase western attire for this event. More importantly, the point of the Olin Formal is for everyone to get together and "Celebrate what is right about Olin!" This includes the students, faculty, staff, cultures, activities, etc. Show your pride and register today!

Date Optional

Many people are asking, "do I need to bring a date to the Olin Formal?" The simple answer is no. This event is a unique opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to socialize in a classy, yet casual setting. While guests are optional, if you have a special someone (or a friend) in mind, feel free to ask them to the event. Remember, non-Olin guests are $20 are need to be registered via the online registration link. http://www.olin.wustl.edu/orgEvents/gbsa/olinformal/

A testimonial ode from a JD/MBA: The grad school formal-going experience

Each winter the law school hosts a formal event
Replete with music and gowns, and tuxedos you rent.

The “Law Prom,” as we refer to this Barristers’ Ball
Is a special event highly regarded by all.

Faculty, staff, and students come together on this night
And seeing everyone dolled up is truly a sight.

To celebrate with people who you often only see in class
Really feels great, even if you just got a Low Pass.

We look forward to the event as a way to have fun
To relax and reflect on all the hard work we have done.

This year Olin too will host a fancy soiree
With awards, food and drinks we will dance the night away.

So infrequent is the occasion for us to come together elegantly,
And you can’t beat the price – admission is free!

The night is set to be full of glamour and glitz
After all, the Formal is being held at the Ritz!

February 26 is the date we have propositioned,
So say farewell to the mini with this new tradition.

Get ready for the Formal and prepare to celebrate
The parts of Olin we know are so great!

Tuxedo rentals for the event

Gentlemen,

Although black tie is optional for the Olin Formal, in the spirit of the event, most people will be sporting tuxedos on the evening of the 26th. Since renting a tuxedo might be a new concept to some students, the purpose of this post is to make the process as simple as possible.

Our official provider of formal wear for the event is:

STALLONE'S FORMAL WEAR on Clayton Road, 2 miles west of Brentwood Blvd
Telephone: 314-997-8901
Website: http://www.stallonesformalwear.com/location_ladue.htm

Tell them you are attending the WashU Formal at the Ritz on February 26th. They are offering us a 20% discount on all tuxedo rentals. They will measure you for your tux in less than 5 minutes. All you need to do is stop by the store to pick it up the day of the event!

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call or email me.

Transportation logistics

All,

I'd like to briefly explain the simple logistics of parking at the Ritz. If you choose to self-park your car in the garage, the fee is $5 for the entire evening. After parking, follow the signs to the"Ballroom Entrance" and we will see you there.

If, however, you would like to valet your vehicle at the front of the hotel, the service will cost you $7+any tip you care to give. It is worth noting that there is some available outdoor parking on the small streets surrounding the hotel, but this will likely be hard to come by.

For those of you being picked up/dropped off by a "party bus" of some variety, the driver should load and/or unload passengers at the "Monarch Entrance." This seems to be well-known to area drivers, so there should be minimal confusion. The address is 100 Carondelet Plaza, St. Louis, MO 63105. It is very easy to get to from school.

And finally, as your transportation representative, I would like to emphasize the use of designated drivers, carpooling, and taxis. Four hours of open bar will help ensure that everyone gets their fair share, but safety for this event is paramount. Please use good judgment so we can all avoid any tragedy that would mar what promises to be an elegant evening and phenomenal opportunity for all of us to get together, celebrate the friends we've made and the school we are lucky to be a part of (And yes, I just ended a sentence with a preposition. What of it?).

Best,

David Logan
